Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll Mascara

23/09/2018

About a little less than a year ago I figured that all of my mascara back-ups were gone and I needed to stock up. I just like to have a little stash of product, just in case I run out of product unplanned. I ordered a lot of new mascara’s that I had never tried before and now I’m almost at the end of that. One of the last mascara’s I had laying around to try out is the Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll Mascara. I had no experience at all with the YSL mascara’s so I was very interested to see what this one would be like. I’ve been using it for over a month now, so I think it’s about time for me to write a review about it. If you’re interested in finding out more about this mascara, make sure you continue reading this post!

First things first, let’s have a little chat about the packaging. Like we all are used to from YSL, their packagings are luxurious and glamorous and so is this one. The entire outside of the packaging is golden and it has the YSL logo engraved it it. Aside from that they kept it very simple. The only other decoration to be found on this packaging is the word ‘baby doll’ in red, and that’s it.

I do really like how simple they kept everything. Somehow I really love the simplicity of it and I do actually think that it’s the simplicity that makes this packaging look so luxurious. Obviously the fact that it’s golden also has something to do with it and I also like the YSL logo on it, but the simplicity is the main thing. In addition to all that the packaging does actually feel pretty well made and rather hefty for a mascara. It’s definitely not a heavy product, but you can tell by holding it that it’s a little more luxurious than some other mascara packagings you might have held throughout your life.

Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll Mascara – €35

Having discussed the packaging in excruciating detail, let’s have a little chat about the wand that comes with this mascara. In my opinion the wand is about 70% of the mascara. If the wands’ good, if that works for me, the mascara will most likely work for me. Obviously the formula also interferes with that, but the wand is more important to me in that case.

Those who have been following me for a while know that I love a good spikey wand, not those hairy bristle ones. Those are way too fluffy for me and give me those fluffy weird lashes that don’t look intense van dramatic. This wand is exactly what I wanted, spikey and good for getting that intense and dramatic lash-look. It’s really easy to work with because it’s not very thick. This makes it more precise and it will help you with not spilling any product onto the rest of your face.

I also think that the wand is amazing at separating the lashes, while adding enough volume and product. I do think those two factors are important. Especially if you apply the mascara using that ‘zig-zag’ motion, your lashes really just won’t stick together. Even if you do decide you want to build up the intensity by applying another coat, this mascara won’t clump up your lashes!

According to YSL their Baby Doll mascara has a unique formula that provides defined volume, lash-by-lash separation and up-to 24 hour wear. It should create a full open-eye effect by lifting and separating the lashes. Thanks to the formula the volume and intense colour are long-lasting and will be evenly dispersed with no flakes, clumps or smudges. They say that with this mascara you can reach every lash, including the baby ones, for a full fringe effect. The brush has duo-length bristles that adapt to all lash types, separating, coating and multiplying lashes for defined volume.

All in all these claims are pretty out there. I do think they use a lot of basic terms that say pretty much the same thing, but in general they just say that it will separate, lengthen and add volume and that it’s going to be very longlasting. So that does sound good, and in general I do agree with them.

I don’t exactly know why, but at first I wasn’t completely convinced that this mascara was going to be it for me. However, it really turned out to be amazing. From the first time I used it I was very impressed and surprised by how well this mascara works for me, and I’m now going to explain why.

Taking a look at the swatches will probably clarify why I like this mascara so much. I only applied one coat of mascara on these pictures and look at the effect. My lashes look very intense, they are black, voluminous and very defined. I also think that they look a lot longer and thicker. And in addition to that they are nicely separated. It might look like some of my lashes are kind of stuck together, but if you compare them with the before picture you’ll see that that’s what they naturally do. This mascara definitely doesn’t stick or clump my lashes together.

Another thing I thought was definitely worth mentioning is the fact that this mascara smells really, really good. And to be real here, I have never really had a mascara that actually smelled good. That’s a pretty unique thing. It has a very slight, unique scent to it that does add a luxury feel to the entire experience. I know it’s not the most important thing of all, but I do think it’s a nice little extra that is worth mentioning.

In terms of staying power this mascara does really impress me. So far it has never, ever smudged on me. It stays in place all day long, it doesn’t lose its intensity and it doesn’t flake off my lashes. I also like that it actually keeps my lashes curled all day long and that they don’t go soft after a couple of hours. I’m just really happy with how well this product stays on. It’s definitely one of those fool-proof mascara’s that you just need in your collection!

All in all I’m a huge fan of the Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll Mascara. I didn’t have extreme high hopes for it, but it turned out to be one of my favourite mascara’s now! I love how well it separates my lashes, while it makes them look long and voluminous at the same time. I also love how longlasting it is and the fact that it really doesn’t smudge on me. I’m really excited to try some other mascara’s from this range in the near future!

That would be it for today. I hope you enjoyed reading todays’ review, and be sure to let me know what you think of this mascara and whether or not you think it’s worth the splurge!
