For the longest time I just didn’t understand the whole hype about cushion foundations. I felt like they were a waste of money because you don’t get a lot of product and they are very expensive. Until I saw a video from Gabriella in which she used the Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Cushion Foundation. It looked so flippin’ amazing on her that I decided to immediately buy it myself and give it a go. So that’s what I’ve done. I’ve been using it for quite some time now which means that today is the day I’m going to review it. If you’re interested in finding out more about this product, make sure you continue reading this post.
Like we’re used to from Yves Saint Laurent, the packaging on this cushion foundation is just absolutely stunning. I do get why some people think it’s a little over the top or too much, but I do love it. The box in which the compact comes is completely gold and has black text on it. The compact itself is even prettier. It has a very pretty round shape and the lid of the compact is black and has the YSL logo in it in gold. The sides of the lid and the rest of the packaging are fully gold. I think this looks super, super chic and classy. Totally YSL.
When you open up the compact you’ll find a mirror inside of the lid. On the bottom part of the packaging is the cushion. It is closed off with another lid on top of which is the sponge you can use to apply it with. If you take out the sponge and open up the lid you’ll get access to the cushion. I really like how the cushion is closed off so well because that does protect the product from drying out. And if one thing, you really don’t want your super expensive foundation to dry out, right?!
Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Cushion Foundation B10 – €52,20
The shade range of this YSL cushion foundation isn’t super impressive. I bought mine on Lookfantastic and I could only find about 4 to 5 shades. Maybe there are more on their own website, but knowing them I wouldn’t necessarily expect like 40 different shades. Anyway, the shade I ended up buying is the second lightest shade called B10. I couldn’t find B05 on Lookfantastic but since I heard that this foundation does come off pretty pale I decided B10 was fine. Now that I have it I am really glad I decided to go for B10. It’s a great match for my skin tone. It has a nice neutral to slightly warm tone to it and it is quite light. It’s very flattering in my opinion.
The thing with these cushion foundations is that they come in a little compact with a literal cushion in them. At first I didn’t really know how to work with that. What would be the best way to apply it? It does come with a sponge and I have to say that I am quite impressed by how well that sponge works for me. It is a very thin sponge and it doesn’t feel like there is much in it, but it works. The only downside about that sponge is that the foundations stains are in there forever. I tried cleaning in for so long but it just wouldn’t get out.
Another way to apply this is by using a brush. These days I literally never use brushes to apply my foundation, but because this is something different I did end up giving it a try. Because it’s such a natural and thin foundation I actually really like the way that made my skin look. I felt like it was a lot quicker than using a sponge and it didn’t make it look streaky at all!
According to YSL their Fusion Ink Cushion Foundation is supposed to give a radiant, smoother looking complexion on the go. It should have medium coverage and it can be used alone or as a top-up product for skin that looks luminous all day long. It should have a cool, fresh sensation when applied and has buildable coverage with a natural look. It’s also supposed to be long-lasting. Another good thing to know is that they do offer refills, so when you run out you don’t have to buy the whole thing again. That will save you a couple of bucks!
All in all it does sound like a foundation that is really up my alley. I don’t have perfect skin but I do love wearing natural foundations. I also like that it’s supposed to be buildable for days where I’m still craving that natural finish but want a bit more coverage and I like that it’s supposed to be long-lasting. However, my favourite thing about their claims is that it’s supposed to make your skin look luminous. And I do love myself some luminous looking skin.
However, the fact that they claim all of these amazing things doesn’t make it true already. In general I do think that they describe their product really well in their claims, but the one thing I don’t fully agree with is the claim about the medium coverage. In my opinion this isn’t more than a light coverage.
I think these swatches do show you what I’m trying to say. It does definitely even out the skin really nicely, but it doesn’t cover up the redness or the spots I have on my face. It makes me look more ‘polished’ but it isn’t covering all that well. The claim they make about it being buildable is true, so you might be able to build it up to a more medium kind of coverage. But I still don’t think they should call it that, that’s a bit misleading. I don’t even have any hardcore pimples or anything and even on me it doesn’t cover up everything.
In terms of finish I do fully agree with them. It does look like both pictures are pictures with a bare face. You really can’t tell it’s there by looking at it and you can’t feel it. It’s so super lightweight. I think that makes this foundation so unique but also very appropriate for days where you want to be sure your makeup looks flawless all day long. I’m so excited about it!
In terms of staying power I haven’t noticed anything outstanding. That means that it isn’t mind-blowingly long-lasting, but it also isn’t a foundation that isn’t long-lasting at all. It just stays in place all day long and it looks pretty all day long as well. It’s just foolproof.
I think it’s no secret anymore that I love the YSL Fusion Ink Cushion Foundation. I’m still so mind-blown that I, Nicole, love a cushion foundation. I really didn’t see that one coming. But this foundation really is worth every penny. The coverage is stunning, the finish is just amazing and it is so super natural looking. This is just a musthave for me, I love, love, love it!
With that being said I think I covered everything I wanted to in this post. Thank you guys so much for reading and be sure to let me know what you think of cushion foundations!
