Highlighter is one of those products that has gained a lot of popularity throughout the last couple of years. At first I was rather on board with it, but after a while I felt like it became a bit too much and I stopped caring that much about highlighter. I mean, I like a bit of glow on the tops of my cheeks, but I don’t want my cheeks to function as a mirror. I don’t hate the look of it on others, but it just doesn’t go that well with my everyday makeup style. Even though I’m not crazy about highlighter, I do have a couple of big favourites that I want to share with you guys. These highlighters are giving me a nice glow, but nothing too extreme. If you want to read about my top 5 favourite highlighters and why I love them so much, make sure you continue reading this post!
My first favourite is a very obvious one, it’s my Dior highlighter. I think most of you guys know this by now but I’m completely head over heals in love with Dior and everything they make. Of course that doesn’t mean I think all of their products are great, but most of them are. And this highlighter is one of them. Back when I bought this highlighter it was the only one in their collection. I believe they had like two shades or even just this single one. Anyway, the one I got is number 001 and it’s the most universal shade. It’s a gorgeous shimmery champagne colour that will look good on literally all skin tones. I think it’s super flattering and pretty looking.
The reason why I love this Dior Nude Air Luminizer so much is because the quality of it is just incredible. I think it’s phenomenal how well they formulated the powder and how nice the shimmer is worked into it. It’s a very smooth looking glow and it’s definitely buildable in intensity. I think that the powder is rich and silky and that it makes application very easy.
A while ago they did revamp their highlighter range so I’m not sure whether or not this 001 is the same as the revamped version and if the quality is the same. But knowing Dior I’m pretty sure that the new version is amazing too, and it’s also a bit more affordable!
This next highlighter is actually one that really surprised me back when I bought it. At that point I had never tried a highlighter from Estée Lauder so I didn’t know what to expect. But as it turns out, this Bronze Goddess Illuminating Powder Gelee is stunning. It’s a super summery looking product and it has the prettiest packaging ever. The powder used to have these different coloured stripes but those have faded by now.
The colour of this highlighter is still as wearable as the Dior one, but it’s a bit darker and more intense. I also think that the glow this gives to your skin is a lot more intense than the glow of the Dior highlighter. However, you can still control it in a way it won’t look too out of hand and that’s something I really love about this powder.
Just like the Dior highlighter, this Estée Lauder beauty also has an amazing formula. It’s, again, very rich but also a bit creamy. Not in a way this is a creamy highlighter, not at all, but it does have that cream feel to it. It applies very easily, evenly and smooth and it also lasts all day long. To me it’s a bit more of a summer product so I use it much more often when it starts to get sunny outside again, but it’s still one of my all time favourites!
The next favourite is actually a very standard favourite, a cult favourite even. It’s the MAC MSF in Soft & Gentle. This was one of the first more high-end highlighters I ever purchased. It’s not strange that it is, since this used to be the most popular highlighting product ever back in the day. It’s a baked highlighter and therefore it has a very unique formula. It’s not as smooth and creamy as the other two I’ve already mentioned, it’s a lot more dry. I do love a good silky soft formula, but this more dry formula works great for me as well. It does have a bit of a different effect in a way it’s not as like smooth, almost liquid looking, but I don’t hate that about it either.
For some reason I totally forgot about the beauty of Soft & Gentle last year. I just tried so many other ones that I totally loved that I lost track of this one. When I finally rediscovered it I found out that it’s even prettier and better than I remembered it to be. I think that the intensity of this highlighter is exactly what I want it to be, natural but visible. To me this is a great highlighter to start your collection off with and I think it’s just a staple for your everyday stash. It’s perfect for every occasion.
Moving on to a Nars product. This is a highlighting blush powder in a very pretty shade. I have to say that I came across it by accident. I was doing my daily scroll through Lookfantastic and all of a sudden I saw this little beauty. It intrigued me and therefore I bought it. It wasn’t the popular Albatross highlighter and that already made it a bit more interesting to me. I don’t know why, but Albatross really doesn’t really look that interesting to me.
But back to Hot Sand. Hot Sand is probably the most natural highlighter I’m showing you today. I even like to build this up. It’s very natural and therefore perfect for everyday makeup. I think it’s great for those who don’t like to wear a ton of makeup but do want a healthy glow. The shade is nice and versatile. It’s a bit warmer than for example the Dior highlighter, and it’s not as shimmery. I still think that it looks very good and natural on my fair skin tone, and I’m pretty sure it will work for more deep skin tones as well.
In terms of quality this highlighter is obviously amazing. I think that quality and more specifically the formula is the most important thing to me when it comes to literally any makeup product. This highlighter has the same smooth and silky formula all Nars products have. They aren’t powdery at all and they go on like a dream.
The last highlighter favourite is one from a limited edition collection from Chanel from 2017. It’s called the Chanel Le Signe Du Lion Highlighter and it actually has a lion head in the powder. This is a very prestigious powder in my opinion, which makes it even more amazing. But I’m pretty sure that the highlighters from the regular range from Chanel are just as amazing. I don’t think they make a more amazing formula just for a limited edition like this one.
Anyway, I feel like this highlighter is like the top of my makeup collection. It has the most rich formula, it’s really nice and glowy and it stays pretty all day. I feel like the sheen is very smooth and I love the way the shimmer is milled into the powder. It’s not powder with shimmer, but it’s shimmer and powder together. It’s a big difference and I think that that’s what adds the fancy look to the product once on the cheeks.
This highlighter also comes with a brush that I actually genuinely really enjoy using. It makes it easy to apply it very quickly and get out of the door. It makes it a great travel-proof product.
All in all I have a couple of great favourites. All five of them have very flattering shades for my skin tone, but most of them are very universal too. They also all have great formulas, which is the main reason why I love them so much. I just love a good silky, smooth formula.
Thank you guys so much for reading today’s post and be sure to let me know which highlighters you love the most and which one of the five you think is the prettiest!
