For a long time the NYX HD Studio Photogenic Concealer has been a pretty popular concealer in the makeup world. Since I’m a huge fan of concealer I’ve always wanted to give it a try for myself, but I always put it off. A couple of months ago I finally decided to cut the crap and buy it, which is exactly what I did. Since I’ve been trying it out for such a long time I feel like it’s about time for me to finally review it so that’s what I’ll be doing today. If you’re interested in finding out more about this NYX HD concealer, make sure you continue reading!
Let’s start off with packaging, shall we? The NYX HD Studio Photogenic Concealer comes in a pretty standard packaging. It kind of looks like a lipgloss tube but it’s a bit slimmer than most lipgloss tubes are. It is reasonably tall but that’s mainly because of the large lid. Design wise NYX kept it very simple. The main part of the tube is clear and the only decoration it has going on is text, black text. The lid is black as well and all of that together makes this a pretty basic packaging. I’m not a huge fan of it, but I also don’t hate it. It’s just okay.
The concealer comes with 3 grams of product which isn’t a lot, but if you compare it to other concealers that come in similar packagings it’s not outstandingly little. However, I do feel like this is a concealer you might go through really quickly. I’m not one of those girls who uses a ton of concealer, I really only put a little bit underneath my eyes and a dot on a few areas where I need, but I still feel like this concealer is running low on me real quick.

The shade range of this concealer is surprisingly large. Normally concealers only come in a couple of shades. There are some exceptions like MAC, but generally speaking brands don’t come out with that many shades when it comes to concealer. However, this concealer comes in 13 different shades, even including some corrective shades. Even though 13 shades is very impressive for a budget proof concealer I do think they are not doing amazing when it comes to darker skin tones. Maybe there are more shades available in other countries, but in the Netherlands they are really missing some dark shades.
Anyway, the shade I bought is called 01 Porcelain, which is the lightest shade available here. When I first heard people rave about this concealer they were raving about how light the lightest shade was. That it would be light enough to be a shade or two lighter for people with very pale skin. For me that sounded a little too good to be true but still very interesting.
However, in my opinion the shade is nice. It’s great for light skin tones and it might be a shade lighter than my skin tone so it still can give me that brightened look, but it’s not as incredibly light as people claimed it to be. I don’t know if that’s just me, but I expected it to be lighter.
Anyway, let’s start talking about the product itself, the quality if you will. According to NYX their HD Studio Photogenic Concealer effectively covers imperfections, discolourations and under-eye circles without looking cakey or obvious. It’s supposed to be light weight and give a natural medium to full coverage. A coverage ‘you can count on’. That sounds very interesting, also a bit over the top, but I was very curious to see whether this concealer could live up to such amazing claims.
So let’s break it down and discuss all of the pointers one by one. Starting with the texture. NYX claims that this is a lightweight concealer with a natural finish to it. At the same time it claims to have pretty high amounts of coverage which usually doesn’t come with a natural look. However, in this concealers’ case I do agree with what they are saying. The concealer has a pretty thin formula, thinner than you would expect from a medium to full coverage concealer. Because of that thin formula it’s very easy to blend into the skin and it just looks very natural. It doesn’t look like another layer added to the mix. It’s seamless and natural and you definitely can’t feel that it’s there.
Okay this picture proves how terrible I am at taking pictures of my eyes, but still I do think it shows what this concealer does pretty well. On the bottom picture I’m wearing one layer of concealer and one layer will definitely give you medium coverage. It will freshen up the area and make you look more awake and healthy. You can definitely build it up to really cover up those dark circles, but like my boyfriend once said “dark circles show that you’re a hard worker”, and I agree with that.
Another thing this concealer does is smoothen those fine lines. Of course not all of them are gone, but they aren’t as deep and obvious as they were without the concealer on them. I have to say that I personally don’t worry that much about those lines since I am only 19 years old, but still, it’s something I did feel like mentioning.
By the way, I’m focussing this review on covering up my dark circles, but this concealer does an amazing job at concealing the redness on my jawline. I have a lot of redness there thanks to an old breakout and foundation by itself doesn’t get the job done. If I apply a bit of this concealer on top of that the area will be nice and smooth again and the redness won’t show through anymore.
Having discussed that, let’s move on to staying power. I have to say that generally speaking concealers last pretty okay on me, but there are definitely ones that are better than the others. Some tend to fade much quicker than others and in some rare occasions they actually turn really ugly throughout the day. This concealer however holds up pretty well throughout the day. It really doesn’t budge. It doesn’t cake up in places, it doesn’t clump up in the little crevasses of your eyes. It just stays in place really well.
Overall I’m impressed by the NYX HD Studio Photogenic Concealer. I have to say that on one hand I expected a lot from it but on the other hand I was also prepared for a disappointment since this concealer is pretty hyped up or at least has been in the past. Luckily this wasn’t a let down at all. The shade matches my skin tone really well, it’s even a bit brightening. I also really like the lightweight formula and I’m a huge fan of the fact that it’s so natural and long lasting. Overall it’s a great concealer for a great price that I definitely recommend giving a try!
And that’s it for today’s review. I hope you enjoyed reading it and be sure to let me know if you’ve ever tried the NYX HD Studio Photogenic concealer and if so, let me know what you think of it!
