Maybelline Brightening Creamy Concealer

08/01/2018

Concealer crayons have been around ever since the crayon-era but it has never really been a trend that took off. However, I have always thought that they do look very interesting and I’ve always wanted to try one. They just seem so easy and convenient. So, a long time ago I ordered one of those concealer crayons, the Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer. I have had it for a while now so I had enough time to properly try it out and today I’m finally going to review it. If you’re interested in finding out more about this interesting crayon concealer, make sure you continue reading!

First things first: the packaging. Since this is Maybelline, a drugstore brand, the packaging usually isn’t too impressive. In this case they kept it rather simple. The product comes inside a big crayon-shaped tube. The bottom is twistable so you can twist the product upwards and therefore there’s no need to sharpen the pencil. The lid is made out of clear plastic which makes it easy to see the product through the lid. It’s not a very necessary feature (seeing the product through the lid), I might have actually liked the look of a tinted lid more, but it’s okay looking.

The pencil itself has a bit of a yellowy, nude colour. It’s the same colour they used for their Dream foundations, so that’s an obvious choice. I do like the colour scheme they used for this packaging. I think it looks really pretty. What I’m not a big fan of is the excessive amount of text on the pencil. They could have kept it more minimalistic and simple, but that’s a choice they made and ultimately it doesn’t really make a difference at all.

Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer – €5,95

The Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer comes in five different shades ranging from fair to medium-deep. There’s also one ‘universal’ shade called white, which I believe is more of a highlighting type of product. The shade range isn’t that wide and it’s definitely not inclusive of all skin tones, but I do appreciate their effort for creating at least a few deeper shades as well.

The shade I ended up getting is called 10 Fair. This is the lightest one of their concealing shades. The shade has a bit of a yellow undertone which isn’t something you see a lot in the drugstore. I personally really like that because I have a neutral undertone and I prefer using yellow tones over pinky tones, but also because yellow does help covering up dullness and dark circles and things like that. So that way it could act as a corrector as well as a concealer at the same time.

According to Maybelline their Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer will create the perfect eye area. It’s supposed to be a creamy, blendable crayon that camouflages dark circles for a more wide-awake appearance. Because the product is infused with light-reflecting pearl pigments and has a lightweight medium to full coverage it will create a natural looking coverage that will minimise under-eye darkness, puffiness and signs of fatigue. The eyes are supposed to appear bright and fresh with a smooth, even tone.

As you can tell from the swatch the product is pigmented and definitely creamy. I was actually very impressed by how creamy and blendable this concealer actually is. The stick concealers we had back in the day were nothing like this. I was also very surprised by how lightweight and comfortable this product is to wear. Because it’s a creamy product and not a liquid I did expect it to be quite thick and heavy and maybe even a little bit cakey, but non of that is true at all. It’s super comfortable, lightweight and it’s not cakey whatsoever.

The coverage it provides is definitely medium, but I wouldn’t describe it as a full coverage. It definitely does a great job at brightening the under-eye area and it definitely covers up a lot of the darkness there, but it’s not going to be like an eraser. There’s still some signs of fatigue left after using that. For me that’s not a big deal because darkness underneath the eyes show that you live and that you work hard, so I do not mind it, but if you do really mind dark circles this might be too sheer for you.

Another thing I really like about this concealer is the fact that it’s incredibly nice to blend. Because it’s so smooth and creamy it just blends like a dream. You can even use your fingers to get the job done. Because it’s a cream rather than a liquid it’s also much quicker to blend because there’s way less product on your face so that’s a big plus as well. This is a great product for when you have to hurry.

Overall I’m actually pretty surprised by how well this Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer works for me. The shade matches my skin tone pretty well, the formula of this concealer is really, really nice and it does a great job at covering up my dark circles without making me look like I’m not human anymore. This product is very quick and easy to use which makes it perfect for mornings when you’re running out of time and therefore I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who’s always in a hurry!

That’s it for today’s review. I hope you enjoyed reading it and be sure to let me know what you think of this concealer-crayon and whether or not you ever use concealers in crayon form!
