When the posts about the new MAC holiday collection came out, the Snowball collection, this gorgeous eye set immediately caught my eye. Last year I bought two eyeshadow quads from the MAC holiday collection of that year and I loved those so much I decided I needed to get whatever eyeshadow thingy would come in this collection. I ended up going for the MAC Snowball Eye Bag in the shade Smokey Gold and after testing it out thoroughly it’s time for me to review it. If you’re interested in finding out more about it, make sure you continue reading!
The MAC Snowball Eye Bag in Smokey Gold comes in this clear box like all products from the Snowball collection do. Inside that box you’ll find and adorable little bag, a silver one with white detailing. The bag has the same size and shape as a pencil bag so you could use it for that or for your emergency lipsticks or whatever, but it’s not big enough for all of your makeup if you use more than 3 to 5 products. The bag does feel pretty well made which actually surprised me, because often these kinds of bags aren’t the things brands spend most time and money on. But I’m glad that it’s like this, obviously.
When you open up the bag you will find the three products that are supposed to come inside. First of all this set comes with a Technakohl Eye Pencil in a very pretty dark brown colour. It also comes with the In Extreme Dimension Lash Mascara and with an eyeshadow duo. The eyeshadow duo doesn’t have a special holiday packaging, but the shadows themselves do have a pretty snowflake pattern printed on them. Both are Extra Dimension shadows.
When it comes to the set as a whole I do think it’s a great value kit. You do get a decent amount of products, all are full size and all are products you’d actually use. Maybe some of you won’t use the eye pencil, but aside from that I think this set is filled with very commonly used products and I like that about it.

Having said that, let’s start talking about the eyeshadow duo. The duo comes in a pretty basic packaging, the outside is black and the middle part of the lid is clear and has the MAC logo printed on it. What is special is the design of the shadows. These are Extra Dimension Shadows and the regular Extra Dimension Eyeshadows already have a pretty pattern on them, but these two are extra pretty because of the gorgeous snowflakes on them. I know that these snowflakes will fade pretty quickly when you start using them, so it’s not going to stay this special-looking forever, but for the time being I just really like the look of the shadows.
There are two different versions of this MAC Snowball Eye Bag available. One that comes with an eyeshadow duo containing a pink shadow and a greyish black one. That set is called Smokey Pink. This set comes with a light champagne shade and a taupe colour and is called Smokey Gold, as you probably already knew since I’ve mentioned that a million times already.
So, let’s start talking about the colours in more detail. Starting off with the light champagne shade which is called Just Gleaming. Like I said these are both Extra Dimension Shadows. The MAC Extra Dimension Shadows are supposed to be shadows with a hybrid formula that combines the smoothness of a cream, the blendability of a liquid and the finish of a powder with long-wearing colour and prismatic reflections. These shadows are supposed to be creamy and silky with a luminous finish. I’ve personally never used one of the Extra Dimension Shadows from MAC before so these claims did make me very excited to go ahead and try one now. I mean doesn’t it sound like these are absolutely incredible shadows?
Anyway, before we get ahead of ourselves let’s first go back to the shades shall we? We were talking about Just Gleaming, the lightest shade of the two. This is a very pretty shiny eyeshadow with some sort of pretty sheen to it. The shimmers in this shadow are very fine which creates a very unique and luxurious look. I’m a huge fan of this shade, I think it’s absolutely stunning and perfect for everyday wear!
Moving on to the other shade which is called Snowdusk. This is a bit of a taupy brown shade. It’s not full on taupe, but it does remind of one of MAC’s eyeshadows called Satin Taupe. Just like Just Gleaming it has a very pretty fine sheen to it, just as luxurious as the sheen in Just Gleaming. It’s a stunning colour and it goes really well with the other one. Together these two shadows are perfect for creating an everyday look.
Moving on to the quality of these two shadows. I’ll show swatches of it later on in this review, but I will already talk about the other features of this shadow regarding the quality. Let’s start off by talking about the texture. According to MAC these shadows are as smooth as cream shadows and that’s definitely not a lie. These shadows feel so rich and smooth, but they also have a satiny feel to them. It’s just really, really nice and because of that texture they are also really nice to work with. These are by far some of the most blendable and easy to work with shadows. They glide onto the eye so incredibly easily, it really blew my mind to be honest.
Like I said these shadows are incredibly easy to blend, which is something MAC already told us it would be in their claims. Whenever shadows are incredibly easy to blend I am always a little hesitant about them ‘blending away’, which means that they blend so well they fade and all of the shadows become one big blurry mess, but that luckily hasn’t happened to me so far with these shadows. They are easy to blend but not in a way they will blend away.
Lastly I also really love working with them because of the incredible colour pay off. These shadows are very pigmented and there’s definitely no need to build them up and you don’t have to work hard for them to even show up or just look good enough for your liking. Because of that they are very quick to work with, with these shadows it only takes me about 5 to 10 minutes to create a whole eye look (I do use some other shadows along with these) and that’s pretty reasonable for me.
Overall I’m just a really big fan of this duo. I think that both shades are just really pretty, they look good together but on their own they are stunning too. The quality of the shadows is just exceptional. I’ve literally never felt eyeshadows this smooth and silky before and I have felt a lot of eyeshadows in my life. I also love how easy they are to work with and therefore I think this duo is just incredible. If you love eyeshadow it’s definitely a must-have duo!
Moving on to the second product in this set, the Technakohl Eye Pencil. I have to say that nowadays I’m not as big of a fan of eye pencil as I used to be. Well, I do still like it and I still prefer it over eyeliner, but I just don’t use it as often anymore. However, I do really appreciate this being in the set. I don’t think it’s an essential product in a set like this for makeup lovers like me because I already have a million eye pencils, but if you don’t have as big of a makeup collection as some of us do, it’s really nice that this pencil does come in this set because it could be a finishing touch for your eye look.
Anyway, the shade of this eyeliner is called Photogravure and it’s a very special colour. It’s not a regular black eyeliner, it’s actually more of a dark brown colour with a greenish tone to it. I don’t think that that makes any sense, but that tone is very settle so it doesn’t really matter anyway. I do really like that this isn’t a black but a brown because I think browns do look really pretty as an eyeliner because they are less harsh but still very defining.
MAC Technakohl Eye Liner in Photogravure – €17
Quality wise this pencil really impressed me. I’m quite picky when it comes to eye pencils to be honest and usually these mechanical pencils aren’t my favourite because they are very fragile and just not that handy to work with as they might seem at first sight. However, because of the incredibly soft and smooth texture of this pencil it is very easy to work with and you don’t have to put too much pressure on it to get some colour onto your eye, thanks to which it won’t break off as easily as some pencils do.
I also really like how well it stays in place. I am a contact wearer so my eyes tend to be pretty watery and sometimes when my contacts start to irritate my eyes can be one big waterfall, so an eye pencil does have a hard time on my eyes. However, this eye pencil just doesn’t budge. It stays in place all night long, it doesn’t fade too quickly and best of all: it doesn’t smudge at all. Not even a little tiny bit, how impressive is that?!
So overall this eye pencil is a big hit in my book. It has great colour pay off, the texture is really nice and soft and I’m in love with the colour. And most importantly: it doesn’t smudge!
Having discussed that let’s talk swatches. Like I already mentioned in the part about the eyeshadow duo, the shadows are very pigmented and just stunning in general. I think that this picture really shows that. Look at how pretty those shadows are. They are so even, so smooth and so intense. I absolutely love them! Just Gleaming doesn’t show up that well on the swatch because of the awkward camera angle and the fact that it’s reasonably close to my skin tone, but trust me it looks exceptional! It really does.
The eyeliner, or as MAC calls it, the Technakohl Liner, looks pretty dang good as well. It’s a very intense little pencil, the tip is thin which makes it a very precise pencil to work with and I have to say the colour is just perfect as well. It’s a very deep brown so it’s a bit softer than black, but it’s not too soft. It does really define the lash line or whatever you want to define with it. I’m a huge fan of it!
Lastly let’s start talking about the mascara. The MAC In Extreme Dimension Lash Mascara. I believe I once got a sample of this which I really loved but I actually never got around to actually buying it. So when I saw that this mascara came in this set I was pretty excited to be honest. Anyway, I really like the packaging of it. The bottom part of the tube is covered in the word ‘MAC’ and this just looks very playful and fun. The lid has a bit of a weird shape but I do like it and because of that shape it’s actually very nice to hold.
The wand this mascara comes with is one of my favourite parts of this mascara. I like those straight to the point, spiky wands with not too many specialties to it. Just a simple wand. This is exactly that and nothing more or less than that. The only downside is that for some reason there’s way too much mascara on the wand when you pull it out of the tube so you have to be really careful with that. I don’t know if that happens because of the wand or because the stopper isn’t functioning well, but it is just something you have to be aware of when you are going to use this mascara.
MAC In Extreme Dimension Lash Mascara – €24
The effect on the lashes does look very pretty in my opinion. This mascara adds a ton of volume and depth to the lashes. It’s also great at separating the lashes, but if you do want it to separate you do have to make sure there isn’t a big clump of mascara on the wand.
One thing I do like to mention is that, even though I do like the effect of this mascara on its own, I do prefer using it on top of another mascara. I like using a more separating mascara with a thin wand underneath to really make sure it won’t end up looking to clumpy and to get that separated base. But that is an extra step and not one that is very necessary. I just like the way it looks better when I do that.
When it comes to smudging I’m pleasantly surprised by this mascara. I didn’t really know what to expect on that front since some mascaras hold up really well and others are surprising smudgers, but this mascara is one of those mascara’s that hold up very well. It survives long nights, humid and moist situations and everything in between. It’s just a great, long lasting, non-smudging mascara.
Overall I’m just a huge fan of this mascara. I think it’s a great mascara to add a ton of volume to the lashes and it’s perfect for long nights when you’re going out or something. It’s strong enough to survive anything and it also doesn’t lose intensity throughout the night which is a great thing as well. I also just really like the brush, I like its simplicity but also just how easy it is to hold because of the strange shaped lid.
The only slight downside to this mascara is that you really have to be careful with it when you want to apply it because there tends to be a ton of mascara on the wand when you take it out of the tube. That could just be because mine is broken or it just is like that, I don’t know, but keep that in mind if you’re going to use this.
Overall I think that the MAC Snowball Eye Bag in Smokey Gold is an amazing little set. I really like the little bag the products come in, I think it looks cute and it’s always nice to have a bag like that. Aside from that I’m a huge fan of all three products that are inside and I think it’s a great value set. If you don’t have a lot of MAC products just yet but you do want to try some of them, this is a great way to do so!
And that was it for this incredibly long review. I hope you enjoyed reading it and be sure to let me know what you think of this set and if you’ve gotten something from the MAC Snowball collection yourself!
