MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer

10/11/2017

I can’t really explain why, but for the longest time I’ve been wanting to try out a MAC concealer. And with that I mean that I’ve been wanting to do so for over 7 years now. And finally, after all those years, I decided to just go ahead and buy one so I could actually give it a try. I ended up buying the MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer and I have been trying it out for quite some time now. I found out everything I needed to know about it, I formed my opinion and I’m able to tell you guys what the good and the bad points are regarding this concealer, which means it’s time for the review. If you’re interested in finding out more about this concealer, make sure you continue reading!

Like all other MAC products this Select Cover-Up concealer comes in a black box. When you open it up you’ll find the product itself. The concealer comes in a rather professional looking packaging. It’s a little tube containing 10 ml of products and the tube itself is completely clear. It doesn’t have any decorations on it, all it says is some essential information and that’s it. The text on the tube it black and so is the lid. Overall it’s a very simple packaging, but I do think it looks very professional and clean. I like it.

One thing I really like about MAC is the fact that they have such a wide shade range. There are so many shades to choose from that even I, with my super pale skin, can find a shade that matches me very well. The shade I ended up buying is NW15, which is one of the lightest shades in the range. For me it’s a perfect match, but it’s not light enough to highlight the under eye area with so if you’re even paler than I am this might actually be a tad bit too dark for you.

MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer – €19

According to MAC their Select Cover-Up Concealer is a fluid camouflage for the skin. It’s supposed to texture-free and almost invisible. It’s supposed to melt into the skin, brighten and lighten up darker zones, fade imperfections and create a flawless result. Lastly they claim it will stay in place for up to 10 hours.

Overall the claims are pretty basic and not very exciting. The only rather exciting part is the part where they claim this will stay in place for 10 hours. I do think that’s a realistic claim since lots of concealers stay in place for that amount of time, but I was still very curious to find out if this concealer was capable of staying in place that long as well.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and first talk about the texture, the consistency and whatnot.

The MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer has a very unique kind of texture. It’s very liquidy and just not like you’d expect from a concealer in a tube. I don’t really know why I didn’t expect it to be like this, but I just didn’t. I do feel like every now and then it’s important to shake or squeeze the tube before using it so the product is mixed and you don’t just get a lot of water when you try to get the product out.

Because the consistency of the product is pretty watery a little bit of this concealer goes a very long way. It goes pretty far. It’s also a very smooth consistency which makes it incredibly easy to work with. It spreads out very easily and blends into the skin so smoothly it just doesn’t take a lot of effort to get this product to look good on your skin. With some concealers blending them is quite a struggle so I think it’s pretty amazing that this one blends in so easily and smoothly. Thumbs up for MAC!

Another thing I really like about this concealer is that it is very lightweight. It has a thin texture which often means it’s going to be lightweight and that’s exactly what it is. You just don’t feel it on your skin at all which makes it the perfect concealer to use on those days where you just don’t feel like wearing too much heavy makeup or if you just want to create a very natural look.

Now that we have discussed all of the fun things about the texture, let’s start talking about the coverage since that is one of the most important features of a concealer!

As you can tell the coverage is okay, I would say it’s medium. It’s definitely buildable so you can get medium to full coverage out of it, but it’s just not a full coverage concealer. I personally don’t mind that at all since I think that a bit of darkness showing through will just make your makeup look more natural and realistic and that is the look I’m going for myself. However, if you’re on the hunt for a very heavy duty concealer this won’t do the job for you. It’s really more of a natural, realistic product.

Even though I think it performs pretty amazing on blemishes I do prefer using this concealer underneath the eyes. The reason why I think it’s better for underneath the eyes is because it isn’t a full coverage concealer and when I do cover up my blemishes I do want them to be covered up for real, not a little bit. But also because of the finish of this concealer. I feel like matte products work better on blemishes products with more skin-like finishes don’t stay in place as well on top of blemishes.

Underneath the eyes this concealer does create a very nice and fresh look. Like MAC said it really brightens up darker areas and make you look more awake!

When it comes to staying power I’m not disappointed but also not extremely impressed either. MAC claims that this product wears for 10 hours and I do think it will last for that amount of time. It just stays in place all day, no matter what the circumstances are and that’s a great thing. However, the reason why I’m not that impressed is because it’s not outstanding for a concealer to last up to 10 hours. It’s great, but it’s not like the IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye which just doesn’t budge until you take it off yourself.

In conclusion I think that the MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer is a great product. I like the shade, it matches my skin tone really well, and it has a very nice and lightweight texture. I think it’s a great fresh concealer that is perfect for brightening up the under eye area and covering up the dark circles, but it’s not my favourite for covering up blemishes. Overall I do recommend giving it a try if you’re on the hunt for a very comfortable, skin-like concealer for underneath the eyes!

And that’s pretty much it for today. I hope you enjoyed reading today’s review and be sure to let me know which concealer is your current favourite!
