I actually think it was back in November when I bought this MAC 188S Small Duo Fibre Brush. I saw some girl on Youtube use a brush like this to apply her contour and I was mesmerised. So I decided I wanted it. I got it on sale on Black Friday and ever since then I’ve been using it on and off. I bought a lot of new brushes in the past couple of months so I’ve been busy trying all of them out. Therefore it has taken me a while to get ready for the reviewing (hence the little Christmas tree in the pictures), but today it’s finally happening. So, if you’re interested in finding out whether I like this brush as much as I thought I would, make sure you continue reading this post!
Well in terms of design I think there’s nothing new about this MAC 188S Small Duo Fibre Brush. I mean, it has a black handle, the thing in between is silver and the brush is a typical duo fibre. It has black hairs at the bottom and white hairs on top. The only thing going on on the brush is that it says ‘MAC’ and the number of the brush. That’s all. Very basic, very standard but also very chic looking. I like a simple design, it looks very elegant to me.
The size of the brush is pretty decent. A while ago I tried the MAC 286 Duo Fibre Tapered Brush and that had a very long handle. Thanks to that it really stood out in my collection. This brush however isn’t that large. Obviously that’s okay. If all of my brushes would be that long, the length would make no difference anymore in the bunch.
The material the brush is made of feels really nice. It’s definitely not a very heavy brush, but that doesn’t make it less proper. You can tell that everything is put together really well and that this is probably going to be a brush that will last you for a lot of years.

I think we all know what a duo fibre brush is. But for those of you who don’t (and that’s totally okay btw) it’s a brush that’s great for applying things with a light hand. Where some brushes are very dense and have lots of hairs, duo fibre brushes are more sparse when it comes to the amount of hairs. Therefore they can create a very natural finish and they won’t give you harsh lines as easily. And that last point is exactly why I thought it would work for contour really well.
I am definitely someone who thinks contour is a very interesting thing. However, I’m not particularly good at it. I try my best, but I’m always scared of getting way too harsh lines or way too dark shadows on my face. Therefore this brush seemed to be perfect for me. The reason why I went for the small one instead of the bigger one is partly because the girl in the video used a small one. But it’s also because small brushes give you way more control. In terms of contour it does mean it applies the powder in a more concentrated way, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
For me it ended up working really well. I have always wanted to have a small duo fibre brush like this because I think it’s super useful for many reasons and I really like it for contour as well. I think I can get nice sharp lines, but in a natural way. The brush blends the contour while you’re applying it and it doesn’t create harsh lines. I do sometimes like to go over it with a somewhat bigger fluffy brush to get it to look even more natural, but that’s just personal preference.
All in all this MAC 188S Small Duo Fibre Brush definitely didn’t disappoint me. In fact, I turned out to love it. I think it’s an incredibly handy brush to have in your collection and I think it works particularly well for applying contour powder. In terms of quality this brush is just amazing. The brush is made out of nice materials and the hairs are soft and high quality as well. There’s literally nothing to complain about and therefore I do recommend this brush if you don’t already have one in your collection!
With that being said I’m going to end today’s post. Thank you guys so much for reading and be sure to let me know what you think of small duo fibre brushes. Do you have one?
