Back in the beginning of September Rihanne launched her Fenty Beauty makeup collection. Even though I’m not the biggest Rihanna fan (I just don’t really listen to her music) I was really excited about it which is why I got a couple of products. One of the first products I got is the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. It came in 40 different shades and I decided to go for the lightest one which is 100. I’ve been wearing it a ton lately, which is why I feel like it’s about time for me to review this little beauty. So, if you’re interested in reading about this Fenty Beauty foundation, make sure you continue reading!
The Fenty Beauty products all come in stunning packagings. This one comes in a very interesting black and white box and the foundation itself comes in a bottle made out of frosted glass. The design of the bottle is very sleek and simple. The only thing it says on the bottle itself is the name of the brand and that’s basically it. The bottle does come with a pump which is always a plus and the lid has a white colour. Overall the bottle looks very elegant and minimalistic, but I do really love it. It looks classy. It also has a very unique shape, it’s rounded at the front and back and flat on the sides, and I like that as well!
Like I said the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation comes in 40 different shades. I think that’s very impressive for a brand that’s just starting off and it’s also one of the reasons why I was so interested in trying the foundation. Usually most foundations are too dark for me, even the lightest shade, so I was very curious to find out whether this foundation would be light enough for me. Back when I ordered it there weren’t a lot of reviews online yet (just one or two) so I didn’t have a very good idea of the shade range, which is why I bought the lightest shade, shade number 100, since taking the lightest shade is usually what I do.
Later, when more videos about the Fenty Beauty products popped up, I started to realise that I might have made a mistake by going for the lightest shade since it appeared to be extremely, extremely light. Nikkietutorials even said that they kept albino skin tones in mind while making this lightest shade. And yes I’m pale, but I don’t think I’m that pale. But since the order was already out there I couldn’t really do anything about it but wait and see what it was going to be like in real life and on my own skin.
But before I reveal whether it ended up being way too light or not I first want to go over the claims Rihanna makes regarding this foundation. According to Rihanna this is a medium to full coverage foundation. It’s supposed to be long wearing, light as air and perfect for all. Overall these aren’t extremely outrageous claims, but they are quite interesting and, if they are true, they would make this foundation very amazing.
But are the claims true? I think that’s the real question here. I think that by now everyone who is reading this, or at least 90%, has already watched a million reviews or read a million reviews on this foundation so you might already know what to expect. However, there are a lot of mixed reviews out there. Some really love it and some aren’t that impressed by this foundation. My theory on why this is the case is that this foundation is great for more oily skin, but it doesn’t look that great on dry skin.
I find it hard to determine what skin type I have because it has changed quite a lot throughout the years, but overall I would say I have combination to oily skin. My T-zone is pretty oily, but my cheeks can get quite oily too. Some days it does lean more towards combination because those days my cheeks act normal, but like I said it really depends.
Anyway, if my theory would be true this foundation would be perfect for my skin type. That because this is a soft matte foundation and it seemed to be quite mattifying and dry. So if you have dry skin this foundation will accentuate the dry patches on your skin, it will cling to them and it just won’t look pretty. At least, that’s what I’ve seen so far. I can’t confirm that based on my own experiences since I personally don’t have dry skin.
One of my favourite things about this foundation must be the formula. Because it claims to be medium to full coverage and mattifying I actually expected something pretty thick and heavy, but instead this is actually a very lightweight formula (like Rihanna claimed it would be). The foundation is pretty thin and runny. I personally really like that because it just feels way more skin like and also a lot more comfortable on the skin.
But aside from being comfortable on the skin this formula has more benefits. One of those benefits is that it goes very far. I only need one to two pumps of this foundation to fully cover my face, while I usually, when I use other foundations, I need about three pumps of foundation. Because of this the foundation will last a lot longer and that’s always a big plus in my book.
One last thing about the formula is that it’s very nice and blendable. I usually prefer applying my foundations with a sponge since I think applying it with a brush only looks good with very specific types of foundations, but this foundation actually looks good either way. Since a brush works a lot quicker I love using that on days I’m in a hurry or just don’t feel like doing makeup, but applying it with a sponge works perfectly fine as well.
Coverage wise this foundation is pretty amazing. You wouldn’t expect it of a foundation with this thin of a formula, but this baby covers like no other. They say it’s medium to full and I totally agree with that. When you apply one layer of foundation you will get medium to full coverage, so not completely full coverage but more than just medium, and when you apply another layer on top you’ll get full coverage. And even though I definitely don’t have the worst skin in the world I can enjoy a bit of full coverage foundation from time to time. I just think that it creates a great base, a nice and clean canvas, for the rest of the makeup.
Like I said two coats of this foundation will get you full coverage, but that does mean you have to layer this foundation. Generally speaking layering foundation isn’t really a problem. I’ve rarely used a foundation that didn’t react well to that. This foundation isn’t an exception either. The only thing that is very important to keep in mind while layering this foundation is that you wait a second or two in between the layers so it can set.
I know we’ve already discussed it, but let’s talk shade one more time. If you take a look at the picture with just foundation it might seem like I’m a zombie. And to be honest I do look like a zombie on that picture. However, on that picture the foundation hasn’t set yet. I know that there are a lot of people who say that this foundation oxidises, but in my opinion that’s not the case, it actually sets and once it sets it becomes the colour it actually is. That colour is still a bit light for me, but it’s a lot better than the colour it is when it’s freshly applied and still wet.
After applying the rest of my makeup I think the colour looks pretty fine. It’s not the perfect match, if it would be a shade darker it wouldn’t be bad, but it doesn’t look too crazy in my opinion.
Having said that I also want to go over the finish and how this foundation sits on the skin during the day. Like Rihanna says this is a soft matte foundation and I agree with that statement. Soft matte is the perfect word to describe what it looks like. That because it’s not extremely matte, it still looks realistic, but it’s on the matte side of the spectrum. On my skin that soft matte finish looks really good. I don’t have a lot of dry patches or textured areas it can cling to, but I am pretty sure that if you do have areas like that it won’t look as perfect as you might have hoped.
The only thing I don’t really like about this foundation is that sometimes it does look a little funky around the corners of my mouth because I probably took a sip of my drink before it had set and then you have those weird lines, but once it has set you can’t move it anymore, it literally doesn’t budge, so you can’t really correct that funky area.
The staying power however is incredible. Like I said this foundation doesn’t budge. Once it dries down it stays there all day long. No matter what you’re doing, who you’re touching, it just stays in place. This makes it a pretty fool proof foundation and perfect for days when you know you’re going to be out for long or if you know you’re going to be doing lots of activities normal foundations won’t survive.
Overall Rihanna really impressed me with her Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. Even though the shade is a tad bit light for me I think this foundation looks amazing on my skin. The coverage is medium to full so it really creates that flawless base for the rest of your makeup and to top that all off it stays in place all day, no matter what. Yup, this really is one of my new favourite foundations. I’m so in love with it!
And that pretty much concludes today’s post. I hope you enjoyed reading it and be sure to let me know what you think of this foundation and if you’ve already tried some of the Fenty Beauty products!
