A couple of days, maybe even weeks, ago I let you guys know I bought quite a few products from the new Fenty Beauty makeup collection and I already reviewed one of the products, the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. Today it’s time for the second Fenty review. This time I’m going to be talking about the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer. Even though primer doesn’t seem like a very exciting product I was incredibly excited to try it and I can’t wait to tell you guys everything there is to know about it. Anyway, if you’re interested in reading about this gorgeous looking primer, make sure you continue reading!
So, let’s start this review off by talking about the packaging shall we? Just like the foundation the primer comes in a bottle made out of frosted glass. Instead of a white lid, pump and text this one has a nude coloured pump and lid and the text on the bottle is grey. Overall the bottle has a very simple and minimalistic design and it looks very sleek. It also has a very slick shape since it’s rounded on the front and back but flat on the sides, and all of those things together make this a gorgeous packaging. It’s actually one of the prettiest primer packagings I have seen so far.
Since this is a new collection there is only one type of primer in there, which is this Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer. I have no idea whether Rihanna is going to expand her primer collection anytime soon, or at all, but I do hope she does since this primer is absolutely incredible.
Before we start talking about why it’s so amazing, let’s first cover the claims. According to Rihanna this primer has a smooth and pore-diffusing finish. It will extend makeup wear and it’s also supposed to be hydrating. I really like that it’s supposed to be hydrating, since I don’t own any hydrating primers at all. What I also like about that is that it makes a great duo with the foundation. That might sound like a weird thing to say because the foundation is mattifying and this is hydrating, but in order for the foundation to look good you must have hydrated skin or at least a hydrated base to put it on top of. So even if you have somewhat dry skin, this primer could make sure the foundation turns out great on your skin as well!
But is it actually hydrating? And is this actually going to give your skin that retouched effect? That’s the question you could be asking yourself at this point of the review. Well, I’m going to go through those points one by one and let you guys know whether I think those claims are true or not.
Let’s start off by talking about the hydrating aspect of this primer since that is one of my favourite things about it. Like I said I don’t have any hydrating primers in my collection and that’s because I have combination to oily skin. But lately I’ve really been into moisturising my skin as a cure to my oiliness which is why this product seemed so perfect for me. And it is.
When you touch the actual product, especially when you distribute it all over your face, you can really feel the moisture that is in this product. It’s very hard to describe what that feels like, but it almost feels like you’re applying lotion to your skin. Texture-wise it’s actually pretty similar to a lotion so I think that’s the best way to describe it.
When I think of a lotion-like primer I actually don’t think of something very hydrating but more of a lightweight product. However, this really has that hydration in it which does make it a little less lightweight. Not in a bad way, not at all, I actually really enjoy the way it feels. But I do want to let you guys know that it doesn’t feel like a gel-based moisturiser or lotion or anything like that. It’s more of a creamy lotion kind of product.
The oily skinned girls who are reading this might wonder whether the hydration aspect of this primer isn’t too much for their already oily skin. In my opinion, and in my experience, this definitely isn’t too much. This primer isn’t going to make you look greasy and it’s not going to promote oiliness during the day. In fact it just adds the right amount of hydration which creates a really pretty and healthy-skin look.
Aside from hydrating the skin this primer also claims to make your face look a little retouched. It’s supposed to diffuse pores and create a smooth base. I always find it really hard to judge a primer on those kinds of things because it’s just very hard to tell whether that’s the case or not. I do 100% think that this primer is amazing at creating that smooth base and I do definitely think it preps the skin really well for primer, so that’s one thing. But whether it really diffuses my pores, I don’t know.
What I do notice is that it forms a layer on top of my pores which make sure my foundation won’t look funky on them. So even though on its own it might not diffuse my pores, it does make sure they are less out there when I apply my foundation. I’m really happy about that!
When it comes to the application proces of the primer I’m very positive as well. This primer has just the most amazing texture in the world. I’m personally not a big fan of those very silicone-like primers, I don’t like that slick and slippery feeling, but I do like lotion or serum like primers. This one has, like I mentioned before, more of a lotion like texture. It’s pretty thin and very blendable, but it’s not runny at all. It’s a very nice texture in my opinion and a little bit of it goes a very long way, which is something I definitely appreciate. Only one or maybe one and a half pump of primer is enough to prime my entire face.
Once the primer is blended in it does feel very unique. A lot of people have mentioned this already, but it feels a tad bit tacky. And again, that isn’t a bad thing, at least it isn’t in my opinion, but it is different. What I do want to say is that it isn’t super tacky in a way your face is as sticky as tape, it’s just a tad bit tacky. Because of that I feel like my foundation sticks to it better which increases the staying power of my foundation.
So the extended wear time claim Rihanna made regarding this primer is definitely true. I have been wearing this primer underneath all of my favourite foundations and each and every single one of them have lasted all day long thanks to this primer. I’m impressed!
Overall I think this is a phenomenal primer and I feel like it doesn’t get as much love as it deserves. I know that for some people primer is a rather boring product, some don’t even use it, but this primer is something different. It’s not like your basic everyday primer you find at the drugstore, it’s unique and it’s very, very effective. I enjoy using it a lot and I’m really glad I decided to give it a try!
And that’s pretty much it for today’s review. I hope you enjoyed reading it and be sure to let me know what you think of this primer and if you’ve tried some of the Fenty Beauty products yourself!
