Like I say in almost every review: I’ve been wanting to test the Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup for years now. But literally for years. I don’t know why I always put off buying it because it’s not like I never buy high-end foundations. Anyway, a while ago I finally decided to buy it and lord I’m happy I finally did that. I did build up some pretty high expectations, but I was pretty convinced they weren’t too high. After testing it out for a while it’s time for the review in which I’m going to tell you all about this very, very famous foundation. So, if you’re interested in finding out whether or not this foundation met al of my high expectations and if it’s worth the hype or not, make sure you continue reading!
I always thought the Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation came in a square-shaped glass bottle, so when I took this bottle out of the box I was quite surprised when I found out it’s more of a rectangular shaped bottle. Of course it has 30 ml of product in it which is standard so it doesn’t really matter on that front, but I just imagined it differently. Aside from the unexpected shape I do really like the look of the bottle. It’s very classic, elegant and feminine. It feels very well-made and I like that it’s not too big or chunky. It doesn’t take in too much space in your makeup bag.
One thing that does bother me when it comes to the packaging is that you have to purchase a pump if you don’t want your foundation to come out of a big hole. I just don’t get why brands do this. If brands like Essence can afford to create foundations with pumps on them, why on earth isn’t Estée Lauder doing it. Why do you have to spend 5 more Euro’s just to get a pump?! To me that’s just absolutely ridiculous!

Anyway, let’s not get ourselves annoyed by the pump-issue and let’s move on to the shade selection and the claims. The Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation comes in quite a wide variety of shades. They have different undertones and have shades light enough for very pale skin and shades that are pretty deep, hopefully deep enough for most or all deeper skin tones. The shade I bought is called 1C0 Shell and isn’t available in the Netherlands, but it is online on sites like Feelunique and Lookfantastic. I don’t know why Dutch stores don’t carry this shade – especially since we Dutchies are incredibly pale – but okay. Online is fine for me too.
1C0 Shell is a very pale foundation with a cool undertone. Since I actually have a neutral undertone I wasn’t sure whether this was going to match me or not. On the pictures it did seem a little pink. Luckily it’s actually a pretty good match. On the skin it’s not too pink at all and it actually does come very close to my skin tone. By the way, you might wonder why on earth I buy a foundation with a cool undertone while I’m neutral, but that’s because this cool toned shade was actually a lot lighter than the neutral toned version of it and I really needed it to be this light.
Having said that, let’s move on to the claims. According to Estée Lauder this foundation is a long wearing foundation that stays in place for up to 15 hours looking perfect. They also claim that it’s a carefree foundation that looks fresh and natural throughout the day, even in humid or moist circumstances. It’s supposed to stay true to its colour (so no oxidising), not be blotchy and it won’t transfer onto clothing. Lastly it’s supposed to feel light and comfortable on the skin.
Overall it sounds like this foundation is pretty much anything you want. It’s comfortable, long wearing and it doesn’t oxidise. What more can you want? From what I’ve heard throughout the years the Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation was supposed to be quite a thick and heavy foundation. I have no idea if they changed the formula or what, but in my experience this isn’t thick or heavy at all. It really is very lightweight and comfortable. I could come off as extremely dumb right now for not knowing, but well, that’s okay.
Now we’re talking about the texture, let’s go on about that for a little bit. The consistency of the product is, like I said, pretty thin. It’s very blendable and it also feels really soft on the skin. It’s a really unique texture because of the fact that it’s so soft and because it’s so blendable. A little bit of this foundation does go a very long way and in my opinion that’s always a good thing. I mean, in that case this bottle will last you a lot longer and considering the price I can’t see why that’s a bad thing!
One thing that did surprise me about this foundation was the coverage. When people talk about a full coverage foundation, they are very likely to mention the Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation. It’s one of the most well known full coverage foundations. In my opinion full coverage means that it’s supposed to cover up anything, every red spot on my face, all blemishes, you name it. To my surprise that wasn’t completely the case.
When I first applied it, using a Beautyblender, I did get pretty high coverage, but definitely not full. Some of my spots still showed through the foundation. It did cover some of it, mostly the irritation on my jawline, but the more visible spots weren’t completely gone. By applying an extra drop of foundation the coverage was pretty much full, but it’s just not exactly what I expected from it.
And I have to admit that it could totally be my own fault. Maybe I used the wrong tool to apply it, maybe it’s better with a brush, you never know. And also, Estée Lauder doesn’t claim that this is full coverage. At least I didn’t find that information on the site while I was looking up the claims. So it’s definitely not a negative thing or a false claim we’re dealing with here, it’s just something that’s different from my expectations and therefore worth mentioning for me.
But enough about the coverage, let’s take a look what the foundation looks like on my face, shall we?
As you can tell the foundation does have a pretty high amount of coverage. It didn’t cover up my dark circles but that’s something even concealer can’t do. It did cover up all of my redness, my red spots, the irritation on my jawline. All of those things. And those things are my main concern when it comes to my skin. Those are the areas I want to be covered the most.
What I like about this foundation is that it’s very quick and easy to work with. It’s not one of those foundations you have to be really careful with in order for them to look good. I just bounce it in with my Beautyblender and voila. Within a minute or two my foundation is done. No patchiness, no blotches and no streaks. Everything looks nice and even.
I also like that this foundation doesn’t oxidise at all. It stays completely true to the colour and that’s a very important factor for me.
The staying power of the foundation is absolutely incredible as well. This product stays in place all day, no matter what. Of course that’s one of the most important claims Estée Lauder makes when it comes to this foundation – considering the fact they called it ‘Stay-In-Place makeup’ – but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s also the truth. But luckily it is. I have to admit that I haven’t worn it for over 15 hours yet since I usually am not awake for that many hours, but it does last from morning to midnight perfectly.
The last thing I like about this foundation that is worth mentioning is the fact that it doesn’t break up on the nose area. That’s something that does happen to me quite often. Sometimes that already happens when I just applied it, sometimes it happens throughout the day. With this foundation that just doesn’t happen at all. Thank god for that because I hate the look of that!
Overall this Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup is by far the best foundation I have ever tried. The shade matches my skintone perfectly, it has the most amazing lightweight texture in the world, it’s super easy to work with and it just stays in place all day. There’s literally nothing bad to say about this foundation and that’s quite a unique thing. I just really, really love it. If you ever feel like spending a lot of money on a foundation, you should definitely consider this one!
And that’s it for today’s review. I hope you enjoyed reading it and be sure to let me know which foundation is your absolute favourite!
