I can’t really tell you why, but for the longest time I’ve been wanting to try the Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum Primer. I’ve always been a big fan of Bourjois and especially of their face products so maybe it’s just a logical thing that this matte primer of theirs caught my attention. Anyway, I finally decided to purchase it, tried it out for quite a while and today it’s time for the review. If you’re interested in finding out more about this adorably packaged primer, make sure you continue reading!
The Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum Primer comes in a really pretty packaging. It comes in a glass bottle with a pump on top and I love everything about it. The bottle is pretty slim which gives it a really elegant look and has greenish letters on it that tell you what product it is, white letters that tell you a little more about the product and the name of the brand as well as the rim around the top of the bottle are in silver. The rest of the bottle (the inside and the pump) has a salmony colour.
Overall I really like the look of this bottle. Because it’s made out of glass it feels really luxurious. The fact that it has a pump as well adds something to that really luxurious feeling. I also really enjoy the fact that it has green letters on the front because green is just a really pretty colour and I like the overall feel of the bottle. I’m a big fan of it!

I usually continue with talking about the claims, but because I’m so excited about this I’m first going to talk about the scent today. From the moment I opened this product I realised that this smells just incredibly amazing. Like seriously, the scent is incredible. I already expected it to smell good because pretty much all Bourjois products have a nice scent, but this is just amazing. The scent reminds me a bit of sunscreen, which is a scent I really like, but it’s a little more toned down and a little bit better. I can’t describe it very well, but all together it smells like a combination of the typical Bourjois scent and sunscreen and I’m an incredibly big fan of it.
Having said that we can finally move on to the product itself. According to Bourjois this is a light weight mattifying primer. With its lightweight texture the primer mattifies the complexion in any light, whilst minimising pores with its airbrushing action. It maintains the skins natural radiance and it hides pores and blemishes for a soft and velvety result. It’s non-drying and it melts into the skin for all day comfort. You can wear it alone for a radiance boost or before foundation.
Those claims do sound pretty promising and overall I do think that they are true. Obviously they make it sound way more special than it actually is, but all brands do that so that’s not a big deal to me. If you take these claims with a pinch of salt, it’s pretty much the truth. Let’s start off by discussing the texture, since that’s what makes this product so special. Like it says in the name of the product this is a serum primer. It’s not one of those silicone-like, thick and heavy primers. It’s actually very lightweight and it feels really nice and soft. You could compare the texture to a gel-based moisturiser like the La Roche-Posay Duo Effaclar, but a bit thicker than that.
Because of this texture it feels really nice on the skin. It’s incredibly easy to blend and it doesn’t feel weird or slippery at all. One thing I did notice is that you do need a little more than I initially expected because it’s not that spreadable in a way you only need one pump to cover your entire face, but that’s not too bad since one pump is just really little.
Once you spread the product across your skin it actually makes your skin look a little better. I have quite a bit of blemishes at the moment, I have huge pores and my skin is just very angry with me right now, but this product actually manages to calm it down a little. Or at least make it look a little more calm. It evens out the complexion and that’s a great thing to do as a primer since that’s a great base for foundation. It also minimises my pores better than I expected. Of course they’re still there and they’re definitely not invisible, but they are more blurred in a way.
Another thing a primer is supposed to do is to improve the staying power of the makeup you’re putting on top, especially the foundation. When it comes to that I think this product definitely isn’t disappointing, but of course that’s very hard to tell since most products nowadays stay in place really well. The only thing I noticed is that it at least doesn’t interfere with the staying power in a negative way and that everyday I wear this my makeup stays in place all day, so that’s definitely a good thing.
Lastly this primer claims to be mattifying. For us oily skin girls out there that’s quite an important claim. There are lots of primers out there that claim to be mattifying, but in all honesty I’ve never tried a primer before that’s actually mattifying. This product however is actually mattifying, surprisingly enough. Like it claims it does maintain your skin’s natural radiance, but aside from that my skin is just matte. Throughout the day I’ve noticed that my skin has been matter than ever, I’m way less oily, no matter what foundation I use on top, and that’s a very good thing. So for the oily skin girls out there, this is definitely a great pick!
Overall I’m a really big fan of this primer. It smells absolutely incredible, the texture is really nice and actually pretty unique for a primer, it blurs my imperfections, creates a perfect base for the rest of your makeup, makes it stay in place all day and best of all: it actually mattifies the skin and keeps it matte all day while maintaining your skin’s natural radiance. I’m in love with it and I highly recommend getting it, especially if you have oily skin. If your skin is on the dryer side you might want to try the illuminating version of it!
And that’s everything I have to say about this extremely nice smelling primer. I hope you enjoyed reading today’s review and be sure to let me know if you use primer and if so, which one is your favourite!
XOXO, Nicole.
I love this primer! x
