Because I’ve been struggling with quite sensitive and irritated eyes lately I decided I wanted to try a very mild and gentle eye makeup remover. I ended up buying the Avène Gentle Eye Makeup Remover and today it’s time for me to review it. If you’re interested in finding out whether or not this is product is mild enough for people with irritated and sensitive eyes and if you want to find out if it actually does a great job at removing your makeup, make sure you continue reading!
Before we jump into anything, let’s start off with discussing the packaging of this product. The Avène Gentle Eye Makeup Remover comes in a clear plastic bottle with a white lid and quite a bit of text on the front. The packaging is very simple and very slim, which is great because it doesn’t take in much space like that.
The bottle contains 125 ml of product. In my opinion that isn’t an awful lot, but because you’re only using it on your eyes it’s okay. You don’t need that much to get rid of the eye makeup so this bottle will last you quite a while.
So, looking at the back of the bottle you can find out what is in this product as well as what it claims to do. Ingredient-wise I think this list looks pretty good. Of course I’m not an expert or anything like that at all, but okay. The only downside to it is that there is a teeny tiny bit of alcohol in this product. I always used to think that alcohol was very bad for your skin and very drying, but now that I’ve read a book about skincare by Paula’s Choice I know that it’s not necessarily bad. It’s not great either, it’s average. The alcohol will kill germs on your face and therefore prevent skin problems, but it can also be slightly drying. Because it’s the second last item on the list it does mean there is only a super tiny amount of alcohol in here, so that makes it totally okay.
As far as their claims go, Avène claims that this eye makeup remover gel is ultra gentle and gentle enough for people with the most sensitive eyes, contact wearers and for people with irritation prone eyelids. It also says that it’s formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. Aside from that it doesn’t claim a lot. So overall it’s just a very basic and mild eye makeup removing gel that’s mild enough for people with sensitive skin.
Before we jump into anything let’s first say that I think the substance is pretty weird. It’s a gel. The fact that it’s a gel is okay but it confused me. They say you have to apply it using a cotton pad and usually gels are used for example in the shower as a face wash. However, after trying it the way they say you should use it, I figured it was not much of a different experience than I would have had if it would’ve been a fluid. It just feels a little more cold to the touch but that’s basically is.
When it comes to removing my eye makeup I think this product does do a decent job. It’s not the best and most effective eye makeup remover I’ve ever tried, but it’s not way too mild either. It get’s rid of eyeshadow and mascara in a second and all that it leaves is a slightly grey shadow underneath my eyes. So yes, you do need to use something else or a bit more of this product to get rid of literally everything, but it does remove most of the makeup.
What’s even more important than removing the makeup is how mild it is. Does it really not irritate sensitive eyes. Like I mentioned some time in the past I have been struggling with an eye problem lately. I still don’t know what’s going on but it’s extremely dry, everything I use stings and burns and it looks really patchy and flaky. It’s not a good look. Most (well pretty much every) makeup remover I used in that area caused my eyes to feel like they were burning out of my face and I was hoping this one wouldn’t do that.
And I can tell you, it doesn’t do that. This is definitely a very mild and sensitive skin-proof eye makeup remover which makes it totally worth it for me. It doesn’t remove everything, but the biggest part is gone and the rest can easily be taken off with some water or a basic face lotion or whatever you like to use for that.
So overall I think this Avène Gentle Eye Makeup Remover is a great product. At least, if you really have sensitive eyes. If I didn’t have sensitive eyes I’d rather use something that will instantly get all of the eye makeup off, but since this is the only one that doesn’t hurt my skin I don’t mind that it’s not taking it all away. It is very mild and it feels really nice on the skin and that’s why I’d recommend giving it a try if you’re looking voor a very mild and sensitive eye makeup remover.
