As some of you might know, the last year or two I’ve been getting more and more into luxury makeup. What started off with an occasional luxury purchase ended in a severe luxury addiction. I really think that once you go there, you’re ruined. But recently I was thinking, is there really such a big difference between affordable makeup and luxury makeup. I mean, there could be a difference, but is the difference big enough to justify the large price tag? Today I’m going to talk to you guys about this topic and hopefully come to a conclusion that can answer this question. So, if you’re interested in reading about this topic, make sure you continue reading!
* Please realise that the points I’m making here don’t count for everything. Of course there are tons of exceptions out there. I’m just generalising a bit because otherwise it would be very difficult to make a point. I’m also talking from my own experiences, which could differ from yours!
One of the main differences between affordable makeup and luxury makeup is the packaging. Where affordable makeup comes in plastic, thin and simple packagings (which by the way isn’t always the case, but generally it is), luxury makeup comes in more classy feeling packagings. Bottles are made out of glass, the products feel hefty and the packagings feel a little more well made. I also feel like luxury packagings have something to them that just shines luxury. It might be the design or the colours they use, I don’t know, but I like it.
And I can hear people think: Why does packaging matter so much?! And I agree with that. The packaging doesn’t say anything about the quality of the product and the packaging doesn’t change anything about how it works.
However, the experience is difference. If you’ve ever had a really luxury product in the most luxurious packaging you know how amazing it feels to use that gorgeous looking product. It just shines luxury and that does add to the experience in a very positive way.
Conclusion – Packaging
Whether the packaging makes a big difference is debatable. I think it mainly depends on personal preferences. If you’re not that into makeup you probably don’t feel like paying a lot more money for an ‘experience’. However, if you’re a makeup lover who does care a lot about that experience the luxury packaging could make a difference for you.
The second point I wanted to talk about is textures. Textures are a little tricky to talk about because there is a huge difference between textures in products. Generally speaking I feel like luxury makeup have nicer textures. They tend to be a lot more creamy, rich, smooth and silky. They are generally less powdery and/or dusty and easier to work with. Textures of more affordable products can be a little more harsh, hard to pick up or very powdery and dusty. They don’t glide on the skin as smoothly.
When it comes to foundation textures I notice even more differences. Luxury foundations usually apply a lot smoother. There are tons of exceptions that I know of, but generally speaking that’s the case. They sit on the skin nicer and have a nicer finish. Some affordable foundations have gorgeous textures as well, but in general luxury foundations feel a little better.
Conclusion – Textures
On the texture part I feel like there are big differences. I’m not saying there are no exceptions at all, but this is definitely an aspect that differs a lot in affordable and luxury makeup. Luxury products usually have a more smooth and rich texture.
This however doesn’t mean that you can’t work with affordable products or that you can’t get to the same result as you can with luxury products, but you just have to work a little harder for it. Depending on your preferences this point could make it worth it for you to spend a little more or not.
Moving on to the next point, ingredients. I wouldn’t want to say that luxury products have better ingredients because brands like The Ordinary have proved that that’s not true at all. This really depends on the product. Some luxury brands are more expensive because they use lots of amazing ingredients, but that’s definitely not a given. So on this point I can be short. I depends on the product and the brand.
Conclusion – Ingredients
Like I said I can be very short about this. The quality of the ingredients and the amount of good ingredients in a product really don’t depend on the price tag, but on the product and the brand!
The quality of the product might be one of the most important factors when it comes to makeup. It doesn’t matter how much money you spend on something, I strongly believe that whatever it is you’ve spent your money on should be amazing.
A lot of people think that when something is more expensive, it’s also better. In some cases that’s definitely true. I feel like luxury foundations just sit better on the skin than affordable foundations do, but in other categories the difference isn’t as big. For example: lots of budget proof lipsticks are just as amazing as luxury ones. Maybe even better in some cases!
Conclusion – Quality
Overall I don’t think that luxury products are always better when it comes to quality. That really depends on the product. So when it comes to this point you’re really going to have to do your research on the product to find out if it’s worth the splurge when it comes to quality!
Next up is shade selection. In my experiences luxury brand have wider shade ranges. This is definitely not always the case, there are tons of luxury foundations with only 8 different shades, but generally speaking it’s more likely that a luxury foundation has a wider shade range than a more affordable brand.
Aside from that I feel that affordable brands lack very deep shades. They usually have a relatively light shade -which definitely isn’t always light enough for pale people like me- and their darkest shade usually is a medium tone. I always hate it when that happens! You can’t just not include deeper shades, that’s not okay!
But it’s not just the shade range that makes a difference, it’s also about undertones and the shades in general. With affordable foundations it happens way more often that the shades turn orange on me. I also feel like there is much less choice regarding undertones in foundation compared to luxury makeup.
Even though foundation shade ranges are a big difference between affordable and luxury makeup, there’s another difference in the shade department that doesn’t concern foundation. In my experience luxury brands tend to have more unique shades in their collection when it comes to eyeshadows, blushes, etc. Affordable brands usually tend to keep it more on the simple side of the spectrum and even though there’s nothing wrong with that, it does make a difference.
Conclusion – Shades
Overall I think that the shade ranges are pretty different in luxury and affordable makeup. When it comes to foundations luxury brands usually have a wider variety of shades which is ideal if your complexion doesn’t match the shades you find at the drugstore.
Aside from that I also feel like the eyeshadow and blush shades are a bit more special or unique in luxury makeup. Budget brands tend to keep it rather simple.
So, in my opinion the shade ranges are a huge difference and since my skintone doesn’t match any drugstore foundation perfectly this difference is worth the price tag for me. But if your skintone does match drugstore foundations perfectly, it might not be worth it.
And that’s already the last point I wanted to discuss. Overall I think there are a couple of big differences between luxury and affordable makeup, however, it’s totally up to personal preference and what you’re looking for whether those difference are big enough to make spending that amount of money worth it. For me personally it is worth it in some beauty-categories, but in others it’s not.
And that’s everything I wanted to talk about today. I hope you enjoyed reading today’s post and be sure to let me know what you think of this subject!
