For the past year I’ve been using the Nivea Men Aftershave Balm as a primer. The last couple of months I started getting tired of it, I wanted to try something else. I decided I wanted to buy a proper primer. My main goal was to get one that wasn’t going to have a super silicone-like feel to it and one that would minimise the appearance of pores. I ended up getting the Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector. If you’re interested in finding out more about it, make sure you continue reading!
First things first: the packaging. When I ordered this product I expected to receive a normal-sized tube with a typical Clinique design. When it comes to the Clinique design I’m positive. The tube has this light green shade and it has a silver lid. The Clinique logo is printed in the middle of the tube in silver and the rest of the text is black. It’s simple, it’s classic and it’s authentic. I like that.
When it comes to the size of the tube, I was quite surprised. It’s actually a very small tube. It only contains 15 ml of product. I didn’t expect a massive tube, but this is really small. Especially if you consider the price. Even though the size makes it easier to take this product with you on the go without requiring you to take a huge bag with you, I do think it should either be less expensive or as expensive as it is now, but a bit bigger.
There are three versions of this Pore Refining Solution available: invisible bright, invisible deep and the one I have which is called invisible light. The difference between these three is the colour of the substance. Invisible bright is white, invisible deep is brown and invisible light is nude. I chose to go for invisible light because that seemed like the most neutral and appropriate option for my skintone.
Having said that let’s move on to the claims and the product. On the back of the box Clinique tells us a little more about this product. They say that this product will make you look good and instantly flawless. It says that it will make it seem as if pores disappear and that it manages excess oil. It also claims to be humidity and sweat resistant and that it creates a natural looking matte finish for up to 8 hours.
So, let’s take a look at the product. The amount I put on my finger for this post is about the amount I use on my face before applying foundation. I apply it focussing on my nose and blending it outwards towards my forehead, cheeks and chin. My nose is the most problematic area when it comes to pores which is why I focus on that during the application.
Smoothing it out feels really nice. It doesn’t feel very silicone-like, like for example the Benefit Porefessional or the Smashbox Photo Ready primer, but it does have a bit of that smooth touch to it. It’s very easy to blend and it makes your face feel very soft and smooth.
But does it minimise the appearance of pores? Of course there is a good chance part of my opinion is influenced by placebo-effect, but in my opinion it does make a difference. I have very visible pores on my nose which peak through my foundation. When I use this before I apply my foundation I feel like they are a lot less visible and they are a lot less likely to peak through my foundation. Obviously they aren’t completely vanished, but the difference is big enough for me to say that it works.
Aside from minimising the appearance of pores, this primer also claims to keep your skin matte throughout the day. As some of you might know I used to have pretty oily skin. Nowadays I’d rather describe it as combination since some areas aren’t that oily at all. My nose and forehead are most oily. When I apply this product on those areas my skin is visibly less oily in those areas. It won’t look flat, there will still be a natural glow, but that glow is, like I said, natural and not oily.
So overall I think this is a great product. It does what it claims to do and I like that. It’s definitely disappointing that it comes in such a small tube, but considering the fact you only need a tiny little bit of it, I guess it’s okay. If you’re struggling with visible pores and shine, this might be a great product for you. I highly recommend giving it a try!
